How Dental Veneers Can Transform Your Confidence
By Dr. Joshua Parry, DMD
Do you remember all the times you used to smile without thinking twice? Somewhere along the way, that easy smile went away.
Maybe it was a chipped front tooth, or just a gap or uneven teeth that developed as you grew. Maybe your teeth have yellowed despite every whitening strip you’ve tried. Today, you press your lips together for every photo.
You’re not alone. A Forbes Health poll reveals 56% of social media users try to hide their smile in a variety of situations, with 34% specifically hiding their teeth in photos. 45% of social media users say their smile confidence has been negatively affected by seeing other people’s smiles online. For younger adults, that pressure is even stronger.
If you’re tired of hiding your smile, dental veneers may be the solution you’ve been looking for.
What Are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers are thin, custom-made shells designed to cover the front surface of your teeth. They are wafer-thin, custom-fitted, and designed to look completely natural.
Veneers are permanently bonded to your teeth and can correct a wide range of problems, including:
- Chipped or cracked teeth
- Stubborn stains and discoloration that don’t respond to whitening
- Gaps between teeth
- Teeth that are uneven, misshapen, or slightly crooked
- Teeth that appear too small or worn down
Veneers are trusted by cosmetic dentists and popular among patients because they deliver dramatic, natural-looking results with a gentle procedure.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, veneers can conceal a wide range of imperfections and are an excellent option for anyone who wants to improve the appearance of their smile—as long as their teeth and gums are healthy.
Porcelain vs. Composite Veneers: Which Is Right for You?
There are two main types of dental veneers. Let’s take a look.
Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are the most common type. They’re custom-crafted in a dental lab from thin ceramic material and are known for their durability, stain resistance, and natural translucency that mimics real tooth enamel. With proper care, porcelain veneers typically last 10 to 15 years, and many last 20 years or more.
Porcelain veneers require a small amount of enamel removal before placement, making the procedure irreversible. However, the results are terrific. Most people can’t tell the difference between a well-made porcelain veneer and a natural tooth.
Composite Veneers
Composite veneers are made from a tooth-colored resin material. It’s the same material used in dental bonding. They’re less expensive than porcelain, can often be applied in a single visit, and require less enamel removal. They typically last 5 to 7 years before needing replacement or repair.
Composite veneers are a good choice for patients who want a more affordable option or who have minor cosmetic concerns. However, they’re not as stain-resistant as porcelain and may need more frequent maintenance.
At Modern Dental Associates, we offer both porcelain and composite veneers. During your consultation, Dr. Parry will evaluate your teeth, discuss your goals, and recommend the option that’s the best fit for your smile and your budget.
What Happens During the Veneer Procedure?
Step 1: Consultation and Digital Imaging. Your journey begins with a thorough examination using our iTero digital scanner and digital X-rays. Dr. Parry will assess your teeth, discuss what you’d like to change, and determine whether veneers are the right treatment for your goals. This is your chance to ask questions and understand exactly what to expect.
Step 2: Tooth Preparation. If you’re getting porcelain veneers, a thin layer of enamel (about half a millimeter—roughly the thickness of a fingernail) is removed from the front of each tooth to make room for the veneer. This step is done with local anesthesia to keep you comfortable. For composite veneers, less enamel removal is typically needed.
Step 3: Impressions and Custom Fabrication. Your dentist takes precise digital impressions and sends them to a dental lab where your custom veneers are crafted. Temporary veneers may be placed to protect your teeth while you wait. For composite veneers, your dentist may sculpt and bond them in the same visit.
Step 4: Bonding and Final Fitting. Once your custom porcelain veneers are ready, Dr. Parry tests the fit, shape, and color. After any final adjustments, the veneers are permanently bonded to your teeth using a special dental cement. You’ll leave with a brand-new smile.
The entire process typically takes two to three appointments spread over a few weeks for porcelain veneers, or as little as one visit for composite veneers.
How Much Do Veneers Cost—And Are They Worth It?
According to CareCredit, individual veneers can range from $500 to $2,895, with an average for a single veneer of $1,765. It’s a wide range, but the cost depends on several factors:
- The type of veneer (porcelain costs more than composite)
- The number of teeth being treated
- The condition of your teeth and the complexity of your specific case
- Your dentist’s experience and location
Composite veneers fall in the same price ranges, but are often a bit less expensive than porcelain, with composites that can be sculpted in office typically having the lowest cost.
Because veneers are considered a cosmetic procedure, dental insurance typically doesn’t cover the cost. However, if a veneer serves a restorative purpose—such as repairing a fractured tooth—partial coverage may apply. Check with your insurance provider for details.
Are veneers worth it? Consider this: a well-made porcelain veneer that lasts 15 years or more is an investment of a few dollars a day in a smile you can feel confident about. That means confident in job interviews, on dates, in family photos, and every time you catch your reflection.
For many of our patients, veneers are more than a cosmetic upgrade. They can be life changing.
At Modern Dental Associates, we offer flexible payment options to help make veneers accessible. We’ll work with you to find a plan that fits your budget.
Veneers vs. Other Cosmetic Options: How Do They Compare?
Veneers aren’t the only way to improve your smile, and they’re not the right choice for everyone. Here’s how they compare to some other common cosmetic options:
Teeth Whitening: Professional whitening is a great option for stains and discoloration—but it only changes the color of your teeth. It won’t fix chips, gaps, or uneven shapes. If your main concern is color alone, whitening may be a more affordable first step. (Read more in our blog: “Professional Teeth Whitening“)
Dental Bonding: Bonding uses composite resin to repair minor chips and gaps. It’s less expensive than veneers and requires less enamel removal, but it’s not as durable or stain-resistant as porcelain veneers. Bonding is ideal for small, isolated fixes.
Invisalign: If your primary concern is crooked or misaligned teeth, Invisalign clear aligners can straighten your smile without veneers. As a Gold Plus Invisalign Provider, Modern Dental Associates offers this treatment for patients who need alignment correction. (See our blog: “Invisalign for Adults“)
Dental Crowns: Crowns cover the entire tooth and are used when a tooth is badly damaged or weakened. Veneers are less invasive—they only cover the front surface—and are designed for cosmetic improvement rather than structural repair.
Not sure which option is right for you? That’s exactly what your consultation at MDA is for. Dr. Parry will evaluate your unique situation and recommend the treatment that best matches your goals.
How to Care for Your Veneers
One of the best things about dental veneers is that they don’t require special maintenance. Caring for them is a lot like caring for your natural teeth:
- Brush twice daily with a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste
- Floss every day to prevent plaque buildup along the gumline
- Visit your dentist every six months for professional cleanings and checkups
- Avoid biting hard objects like ice, hard candy, pen caps, or fingernails
- Wear a mouthguard if you play sports or if you grind your teeth at night
- Limit staining beverages like coffee, tea, and red wine (especially with composite veneers)
Porcelain veneers are highly stain-resistant, but composite veneers can discolor over time. Regardless of the type, consistent oral hygiene and regular dental visits will keep your veneers looking their best for years.
At Modern Dental Associates, we provide ongoing care and monitoring for all of our veneer patients. Your smile is an investment, and we’re here to help you protect it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Veneers
Q: Are veneers painful?
A: The veneer procedure involves minimal discomfort. Your dentist uses local anesthesia during tooth preparation, and most patients compare the experience to getting a routine filling. Any post-procedure sensitivity is usually mild and resolves within a few days. For patients with dental anxiety, Modern Dental Associates offers sedation options to keep you comfortable.
Q: How long do veneers last?
A: Porcelain veneers typically last 10 to 15 years with proper care, and many last 20 years or more. Composite veneers generally last 5 to 7 years. Regular dental checkups, good oral hygiene, and avoiding habits like biting hard objects can help maximize their lifespan.
Q: Can veneers fix crooked teeth?
A: Veneers can improve the appearance of mildly crooked or uneven teeth by creating a more uniform, aligned look. However, for significant misalignment, Invisalign or orthodontic treatment may be a better option. Dr. Parry can help you determine the best approach during your consultation.
Q: Do veneers look natural?
A: Yes. Modern porcelain veneers are custom-crafted to match the color, shape, and translucency of your natural teeth. When placed by an experienced dentist, they’re virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. At MDA, we use digital imaging to plan your veneers so they look like they belong in your smile—not like they were added to it.
Q: What if I grind my teeth?
A: Teeth grinding (bruxism) can damage veneers over time, just as it wears down natural teeth. If you grind your teeth, Dr. Parry may recommend a custom night guard to protect your veneers while you sleep. This simple step can significantly extend the life of your veneers.
Q: Can I eat normally with veneers?
A: Absolutely. Once your veneers are bonded, you can eat all your favorite foods. The only precaution is to avoid biting directly into very hard items like ice, hard candy, or popcorn kernels—which is good advice for natural teeth, too.
Q: Will insurance cover my veneers?
A: Dental veneers are typically classified as a cosmetic procedure, so most insurance plans do not cover them. However, if a veneer is needed for restorative reasons—such as repairing a fractured or structurally damaged tooth—partial coverage may apply. Our team at MDA can help you understand your options and work with your insurance provider.
